Poulsbo, WA – A woman in western Washington called 911 after being frightened by a mob of raccoons who invaded her yard, causing her to flee because of their aggressive behavior. Sheriff’s spokesperson Kevin McCarty explains, “She said those raccoons were becoming increasingly more aggressive, demanding food, that they would hound her day and night — scratching at the outside of her home, at the door. If she pulled up in her car, they would surround the car, scratch at the car, surround her if she went from her front door to her car or went outside at all.”

The problems started because the resident had been feeding raccoons who visited her yard for decades. But for reasons unknown, their numbers ballooned recently, and their behavior became more aggressive as they demanded food. McCarty said, “This is a nuisance problem kind of her own making that she has to deal with.”
When deputies responded to her 911 call, they found upwards of 100 raccoons in her yard and surrounding trees.

Deputies referred the woman to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. After working with specialists and being advised to not provide ANY food to the animals, the raccoons have started dispersing.
Just a friendly reminder – do not feed wildlife.
