Golden Valley, Arizona – A wild donkey found himself in a crappy situation (pun intended) when he fell into a septic tank at an RV park in Golden Valley. According to the Bureau of Land Management Arizona, the wild burro had likely been in the tank for an extended period of time, including during the night when the temperature plummeted to 40 degrees.
The agency described the precarious situation the burro was in:
BLM wild horse and burro specialists immediately responded and upon arrival found the wild burro struggling to hold its head above the water and raw sewage in the septic tank — the tank was about six feet deep. The burro managed to somehow stand on its back legs and hold its head just outside the septic tanks lid. The burro was clearly exhausted, and the specialist knew they needed to act fast.
The rescue team, working with the RV park’s maintenance crew, pumped the sewage out of the tank, and then cut the top to free the burro. After being hoisted from the tank, the exhausted animal was rinsed off and provided alfalfa and fresh, clean water.
John Hall, BLM Arizona’s Wild Horse and Burro Program lead, said:
“Rescues like this highlight the incredible link between the BLM and local communities. When people and wild burros share space, situations can get complicated quickly. We’re grateful for the teamwork that helped bring this burro to safety and for the continued support from the public in protecting these animals.”
