Seville, Spain – Early last week, the tables were turned on a 46-year-old Spanish matador popularly known as the “King of Bullfighters.” Morante de la Puebla was in the bullfighting ring in Seville when a bull gored him in the bum, ending the match and sending Puebla to the hospital with an injury that caused him “immense pain.”
As reported by the New York Post, the injury sent the matador into hours of extensive surgery to repair the damage to his rectal wall and sphincter. The injury and pain have left Puebla with little to no appetite, and he has been receiving nutrition through an IV catheter.
The incident is a stark reminder of the inherent risks in bullfighting. A tradition long defended as culture, but one that continues to raise serious questions about both human safety and animal welfare. The incident underscores the violent nature of a spectacle where animals are routinely pushed to their limits…often with fatal consequences.

Bulls are ruminant herbivores that eat a high-fiber diet of forages and grains, specifically consuming grasses, hay, silage (fermented hay/corn), corn, barley, oats, and protein-rich supplements like soybean or cottonseed meal. They are not carnivores.
If you REALLY want no more animal cruelty of any kind, take animals off the menu for humans as well. Animals used for food suffer as much as animals used in bullfighting (and dog fighting andcockfighting and other forms of stupid human entertainment).
Humans are omnivores and have a choice – the kindest thing we can all do for animals is transition to a plant-based diet.

These bulls are stabled in complete darkness for the month before their fight date. The first time the bulls see light is when they enter the ring. In 1973, while on a student tour, a bullfight was on the schedule. I was horrified at the torment and at the execution of the beautiful bull. The only solace was the meat was donated to the poor. The appropriateness of the injury is so perfect. Maybe now, Spain will prohibit bullfighting.
