Julian, California – The San Diego Humane Society is in the midst of a mass rescue effort at an animal sanctuary in Julian. On Friday afternoon, the animal welfare agency commented on the scale of the effort, writing:
This is one of the largest and most complex rescues our organization has ever undertaken. While we don’t yet have a total count of the animals on-site, we anticipate more than 100 cats, along with dogs, donkeys, alpacas, geese, chickens, roosters, turkeys, goats, peacocks, ravens, a crow and several dogs. We also expect there to be at least 150 horses needing assistance on site.
Though the sanctuary location is outside of San Diego Humane’s jurisdiction, County Animal Services transferred the case to the agency on April 24.
Multiple agencies are involved in the rescue effort, including the Pasadena Humane Society, Marin Humane Society, and Los Angeles County Animal Care & Control.
The group said:
To accommodate the large-scale intake of animals, cat adoptions have been temporarily paused at our El Cajon Campus. Cats can still be adopted during normal business at hours at our San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside campuses.
San Diego Humane has stated that this is an active investigation and details are limited. Read the full release at this link.

Heartbreakingly so many times these so called “rescues” are devastating to the snimals involved. Many are euthanized & yes horrifically many horses end up auctioned off to kill buyers who send them to a terrible death in Mexico or Canada. Then the people who were trying to save them are vilified in the media & left devastat!ed
Those people are NOT victims!
The humane society must now ensure NONE of the horses end up going to ‘Kill Buyers’! They’ve taken the responsibility and must monitor the horses, ensuring they don’t end up on someone’s dinner plate in Mexico, Canada or overseas!

They’re vilified because they should be vilified. The operators of such organizations are NOT victims. They know the consequences of over-extending their resources. Just as you budget your time and money for the expenses of your pet, they must do the same for each animal they take in. Furthermore, they know when they can no longer care for the animals and need to start reaching out to other organizations for assistance. The article says this has been going on for years, so NO EXCUSES.

Time again to roll up our sleeves and dive in to rescue those animals. I’m 3,000 miles away on the East coast otherwise I’d be there (if I could find a pet sitter). Just like the protests at t he Beagle breeding facility we can take direct action for those sentient creatures who cannot. Thanks to all involved. I’d like to hear the details.

Thank you to all those involved with this massive rescue of innocent animals! You are the heroes 💖
