Altadena, CA – An Altadena homeowner who evacuated from their home because of the massive Eaton fire returned to a surprise visitor. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, a 525-pound bear was hiding in the crawl space.
In a release, the agency said:
The homeowner, along with neighbors in Altadena, had been evacuated due to the Eaton Fire. Once they returned, the utility company informed the resident that power couldn’t be restored, as there was a bear under the home where the company needed to work.

The bear could not be tranquilized, so the department’s environmental scientist Kevin Howells worked for 24 hours to coax him out with some tempting food. The bear, dubbed Barry, exited to a trap.
Barry was transported in the trap to the Angeles National Forest and given a welfare check, GPS-collared, and measured before being safely released just after midnight.
