Staten Island, New York – Recently, a senior cat’s world was turned upside down when the only home she ever knew was taken away and she landed at a crowded animal control facility in New York. The 13-year-old cat, Domino, lost her home when her owner was admitted to a nursing home. Sadly, no family was able to take her in.
Domino’s advocate, Albert Harris Photography, writes:
Just days ago, she was curled up in the only home she’s ever known, nestled beside the person who loved her since she was a tiny kitten. But life can be cruel. Her owner, frail and heartbroken, was admitted to a nursing home, and with no family able to care for her, Domino was surrendered to the shelter.
Few people walk into an animal shelter seeking out pets in their golden years. But Domino deserves the chance to enjoy the remainder of her life – she did nothing to deserve the fate she has been given. Please take a moment to share Domino’s adoption information and help her find a new lap to snuggle in.
Note: All inquiries about this cat must be made directly to the animal shelter. National Animal News is NOT the point of contact and has no affiliation with this cat, or this facility. Thank you!

I was a volunteer at a no kill shelter, and the senior animals pulled my heart-strings the most. I highly recommend adopting a senior pet, especially for human seniors, or anyone who wants a more mellow, already trained companion. This beautiful cat deserves to be in a loving home for the rest of her life. I hope this shelter will give her a safe home until she is adopted (no euthanasia!).

Has Domino been rescued or adopted? Her profile is no longer available. I pray she is safe.
I have read, and re-read this article, and I haven’t seen anything that shows that the owner of Domino had any family/friends that refused to do anything about the situation.
Many older people do not have any family and/or friends to help out in such matters.
From the article above, “but life can be cruel. Her owner, frail and heartbroken, was admitted to a nursing home, and with no family able to care for her, Domino was surrendered to the shelter.” It doesn’t say that family refused, it says that there was no family able to care for her – that statement is open to interpretation.
What kind of family members wouldn’t take another family member (even tho it’s a pet) in???? Don’t they understand the stress and abandonment these poor older cats feel and who knows who will take them or do to them!!!Shame on that terrible family not taking her in! I hope the same is done to them when they get old
I couldn’t agree with you MORE!!! I see this type of thing so many times and wonder what kind of shit family these people are.
This is a cautionary tale for everyone, esp. if you are getting older, to make an arrangement with a trusted friend or some contact, to take care of your pet if anything happens to you – and leave THEM money in your Will!
Laura: You may be passing judgement on people that don’t even exist. The article says there was “no family able to take care of her”. I know many older people who have no family/friends to take care of their affairs, and have had to employ a paid “representative”.
I’ll never understand how so called loved ones won’t take in their parents pets when they put them in a home or they pass away. It is hard enough to go to a nursing home but to not know if your pet is going to be killed because your “loved ones” are too selfish to either take the pet in themselves or at least take the time to find a good home for them. Very sad.
must be reflected in the will and donate most of money to cat rescues instead. I am sure if the owner donated a good sum to a reputable rescue, they could provide better care for this precious baby. yet, these “loved ones ” will inherit everything because this is “how it’s normally done”.
Mary,I couldn’t agree with you more. I had a wonderful Calico cat that lived for 22 beautiful years !
I have shared this precious baby on a Facebooks cat group. This is so heartbreaking….I can’t even imagine as well how her guardian is feeling having to give up your baby…..they should allow the fur kids into senior homes. Seniors are so much better with them around. Please adopt this this baby. 13 is not old! She can live a very happy long life!
this is clearly a reflection of the ‘love’ they have for their elderly parent! The stress this must be causing the person in the nursing home is unimaginable. It is so cruel. I bet these ‘caring’ family members will all be there with their hands out when the will is read 😡
