Houston, Texas – A 42-year-old Houston man admitted in court that he killed a protected bald eagle in his yard. According to a May 14 press release from the Department of Justice for the Southern District of Texas, Santos Guerrero admitted he shot a bald eagle at his residence Oct. 11, 2024.
Guerrero’s shooting of the bald eagle was captured on video, and it shows the majestic bird plummeting to the ground. Authorities who responded to the call found the bird alive but grievously injured. The eagle was taken to a veterinarian but had to be euthanized due to the extent of the injuries.

A necropsy determined the bullet caused significant damage to the eagle’s wing. The impact from the fall also caused liver fractures, internal bleeding and a fractured leg.
Guerrero pleaded guilty for shooting and causing the death of a protected species and the judge accepted his plea. U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray set sentencing for July 30. At that time, Guerrero faces up to a year in federal prison and $100,000 maximum fine.

No doubt this total waste of space was going to hold a party and brag to his friends that he shot our American symbol down. He deserves to be sent back to whatever country he came from after having all his money confiscated besides the bare minimum to travel with. That he will be allowed to live freely and still walk around makes me want to puke, but we all know the so-called sentencing for this horrific act against an animal, let alone it being a bald eagle, won’t amount to much if anything. Tragic!!!!!!!!
Why do you assume he “came from” anywhere other than the US? There is nothing in the story to suggest he was an immigrant.
How do you know he isn’t from Texas? Just because someone has a name you consider foreign doesn’t mean they are, Johnson is an English name and England is a foreign country, so everyone with the last name Johnson is illegal and should go back to England? This is about killing our national symbol, he was caught, he’s admitted guilt and he will be sentenced – that is what is important, not his name. The state of Idaho kept finding dead eagles along/under power lines, investigators found out men were sitting at the poles along the lines and waiting for eagles to land and then killing them – grown men, from Idaho, Americans killing eagles just do it.
One year is TOO SHORT for the murder of our national icon. Five years would be a good start. Make the sentence severe enough that the next subhuman will think twice about shooting another one.

the sentences in these cases never fit the severity of the crime. Bald eagles mate for life. Both male and female take part in raising their young. Who knows if this eagle was one of a mated pair… if so, this POS may have also caused the death of some of those nestlings. STRONGER SENTENCES for these criminals. Somehow we need to get their identities out there for the general public for the rest of their lives
