Tucson, AZ – The Arizona Game and Fish Department has opened an investigation into what appears to be deliberate poisoning on a popular Tucson trail. According to the agency, 14 coyotes, three javelinas, and a raven, as well as two dogs, died after ingesting poison in the in the Pantano Wash area, which is popular with hikers.
According to the agency, a necropsy revealed that the poison was placed in an appetizing bait food meant to lure wildlife to consume it.
Officials are warning dog owners to keep their pets on leash if they visit the area to hike. Anyone who spots a deceased animal, or wildlife that is behaving abnormally, is asked to contact the agency’s Operation Game Thief hotline at 1-800-352-0700.
