Carter Lake, IA – More than a dozen cats have been given a new lease on life after they were abandoned for more than a month is a filthy trailer with no access to food or water. Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue has taken in the 18 surviving cats, and they described the deplorable conditions the cats had been living in:
The ammonia smell inside the trailer was unbearable, but Paul and Roberta Cisar, along with Isaiah Langworthy and the Carter Lake Animal Control, worked hours inside the trailer catching the horribly neglected cats.
Isaiah Langworthy, with the rescue group, said:
“Absolutely deplorable, I would say probably a biohazard. The bathtub was completely — probably three-fourths of the way full of cat poop. The litter boxes were overrunning. There was anywhere from two to four inches of cat poop on the ground throughout the entire house. We found a cat dead inside a box. There was a carcass of a cat that had been eaten by its friends that were inside the house because they had no access to food; as well as dead kittens that looked only to be days old. No real access to clean water. The gas had actually been left on, so they were being poisoned at the same time with that gas.”
Four cats did not survive and the ones who did were filthy and emaciated from the long-term lack of care.
Two days ago, the rescue organization offered a promising update about the 18 surviving cats:
Abandoned Cats Update!
We wanted to take a moment and share an update on the eighteen abandoned cats found in a trailer this past Wednesday. All of the cats are doing great, with all things considered. S.O.L.A.S., Jeanette Hunt – Blair Animal Shelter, Happy Paws Plattsmouth, and the Beatrice Humane Society partnered up with Muddy Paws, and each took in some of these sweet souls. All the cats are on their way to being cleaned up and examined by Veterinary partners. We are all overwhelmed by the love and support the community has shown for these angels. We are so excited to see what life has in store for these babies and know they will find loving homes to show them what life is really supposed to be like! ❤️
As reported by WOWT News, an investigation is underway and there is no word on whether or not the people who abandoned these cats will face charges.
