Martin County, FL – A dog trapped in an alligator-infested waterway was rescued by the authorities this week. According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, MCSO Animal Services Supervisor Karen Kneubehl, Officer Shannon McGee and FWC Officer Dillon Hudson helped rescue the dog in Port Mayaca Wednesday evening.
A good Samaritan called for help after finding the dog on a spillway with a 12-foot drop around the rim canal with no way to safely escape.
As reported by WPBF News, Wendy Diaz and her husband had spotted the dog and tried to capture her, but they were not able to. Diaz told the news agency about the frightening situation:
“You can see the gators swimming around, and you know I was scared for the dog and also for us. Because I was thinking we need professionals to get her.”
According to the sheriff’s office, it took the animal control officers some “time and maneuvering,” but they were persistent and finally able to capture the pup, who was taken to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.
