Ottumwa, Iowa – This week, an Iowa man pleaded guilty to charges stemming from his abandonment of an elderly dog in an Ottumwa dumpster. According to KTVO News, 63-year-old Virgel Dean Johnston, Jr. pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges for animal neglect and abandonment of a domestic animal.
Johnston Jr. was caught on surveillance video on the morning of August 27 throwing something into a dumpster behind a business. Good Samaritans discovered the object was a 15-year-old Chihuahua named Tank.
Tank is currently in the care of the Heartland Humane Society, who wrote:
And somehow, after everything Tank has endured, he is still incredibly sweet.
He greets you with a happy tail and a toothless smile. He is happiest when he is held. He has every reason to be frightened and distrustful, yet he continues to show us an incredible resilience that SO many shelter animals possess.
They added:
He is safe now.
He is being cared for.
He is being loved.
And we have promised Tank that being thrown away will not be the thing that defines the rest of his life.❤️
Johnston Jr. will spend 60 days in the Wapello County Jail.

The irony of throwing away a living creature b/c it’s old and you no longer have time for it. Sir, you are old as sin, and completely useless. We no longer have time for you. Please extend the same courtesy to yourself as you did to your poor dog, find yourself a tar pit and throw yourself into it. Maybe in a couple of hundred years you can become oil and finally be useful. Until then, see your way to hell.

Throw the creep who did this into a dumpster and lock the lids. He deserves to suffer. Bless that innocent pup. Hopefully Tank spends the remainder of his days in a more loving and compassionate environment.
Looks like the individual throwing this poor dog in the trash is the one that should be discarded like the trash that he really is. Sixty days is not enough punishment; he deserves much more than that!
What a horrible piece of shit… You reap what you so buddy I hope bad things happened to you. You could’ve done the right thing, but you choose to throw this poor dog in the trash and walk away 60 days in jail is not enough. We need to make these crimes stronger! Hurt more financially and longer sentences in jail.
