Trapped Juvenile Orca Finally Free From Lagoon Where Her Mother Died

British Columbia, Canada – A juvenile whale who has been trapped in a lagoon in western Canada is finally free. The two-year-old Biggs orca, kʷiisaḥiʔis (pronounced kwee-sahay-is), was trapped in the lagoon, north of Vancouver Island, since late March when she and her mother got trapped after the tide receded. The young orca’s mother did not survive.

In the weeks that followed, rescuers had been working to coax kʷiisaḥiʔis out of the lagoon, trying everything from trying to tempt her with seal meat, to having a woman play a violin with the hope of luring the reluctant orca to the channel opening.

In the end, the young whale left of her own accord, swimming out of the lagoon at high tide, under cover of darkness. Campbell River Live writes:

At 2:30 a.m. during high tide under a clear, star-filled night sky, kwiisaḥiʔis swam past the sand bar where her mother died, under the bridge at the end of the lagoon and down Little Espinosa Inlet and into the larger Esperanza inlet all on her own.

Adding:

Today the community of Zeballos and people everywhere are waking up to some incredible news and what can only be described as pride for strength this little orca has shown.
