Canute, Oklahoma – Upwards of 70 horses are dead at an Oklahoma rodeo stock contracting business. According to sources, Beutler & Son Rodeo Company’s horses perished after eating contaminated feed.
The company, operating since 1929, supplies horses for rodeo competitions. As reported by the High Plains Journal, it is believed that the horses consumed feed containing Sodium monensin, which is fatal to horses, causing heart failure and death. There is no treatment for horses who consume monensin, and if they survive the initial consumption, they will likely suffer long-term heart damage.
The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry is investigating the tragic situation. The feed is believed to have been contaminated at the feed mill, unbeknownst to the Beutler & Son Rodeo Company.
