Indianapolis, Indiana – A two-year-old blind dog, entrusted to the care of the Indianapolis Animal Care Services facility, died from “severe heat stroke” during a recent kennel cleaning. The Great Dane, Stitch, was left “for an extended period of time” in the outside portion of his kennel during extreme heat.
Though the dog was given emergency veterinary care, but his condition could not be reversed, and he was humanely euthanized to avoid further suffering. IACS Director Amanda Dehoney-Hinkle tells Fox 59 News:
“Our entire team is devastated by the loss of Stitch. Our staff dedicate themselves every day to protecting and caring for the animals entrusted to us, which makes this incident especially heartbreaking.”
Staff was supposed to clean one side of the kennels at a time to prevent dogs from being left outdoors in the heat for too long. For some reason, the proper procedure was not followed. An investigation is underway.
Rest in peace Stitch.
