Rapid City, South Dakota – A South Dakota family is seeking answers after the death of their beloved horse, Cheyenne. The mare was found dead on the morning of October 9, on property outside of Rapid City. According to sources, Cheyenne was still warm when owner Jake Wolff found her in her pasture.
The 15-year-old mare was a therapy horse to Lacy, Jake’s wife. Jake said there was “so much blood it didn’t even seem real,” reports KOTA News. Aside from the immense amount of blood, there was no visible signs of injury on the slain horse.
But there was a broken and bloodied shovel – and the Wolffs believe that Cheyenne was sexually assaulted with it. Lacy explains the horrifying assumption, “They had either brought or found a shovel and broke the end off so that it was pointy, and they sodomized and raped her. I mean, she must have had so much internal bleeding, and then she bled out.”
The family’s property near Pactola Lake is not easily visible from Highway 385; the family surmises that the people who killed Cheyenne entered on foot
The authorities are hoping that someone will contact them with information. Anyone with a tip is asked to call the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office at 605-394-6116. According to Tri-State Livestock News, the Wolffs are offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the conviction of the perpetrator.

May that lovely horse, Cheyenne, now enjoy heaven forever. When this “person” is found it should just be killed in the same way and buried under a prison. It’s hard to believe that when there’s no doubt that a “person” is guilty of something like this that they’re still afforded human rights. That’s a fatal flaw of “humanity.” Since once one clearly shows him/herself to be a sadistic monster, one is no longer human. No rights, no excuses, no exceptions!
