San Diego, California – On Sunday, San Diego SeaWorld announced the unexpected passing of a nine-year-old beluga named Cyprus. According to SeaWorld, the male beluga came to them on August 22 after being removed from a “dire situation” in Canada.
SeaWorld said Cyprus had been doing well since his arrival, but he stopped eating two days prior to his death. Veterinarians and the SeaWorld animal care team conducted a thorough medical examination and with the help of ultrasound, found problems with Cyprus’ intestinal tract. The water park said:
“An ultrasound showed that his intestinal tract did not appear to be functioning normally and could indicate a serious life-threatening condition. Veterinarians worked throughout the night, providing immediate medical attention.”
According to SeaWorld, the other belugas are being monitored but seem to be in “stable health.”
The other rescued belugas in our care continue to be in stable health and remain under close monitoring as they continue to adjust to their surroundings. As we have indicated, this process will take a considerable amount of time. Our commitment to the health, well-being and care of these belugas, like every animal we rescue, continues. 💙
Rest easy Cyprus.
