Franktown, Colorado – Over 70 neglected horses have been given a new lease on life after being rescued from rural property in Colorado. Humane Colorado took in dozens of horses from the property and noted the horses were in various stages of neglect, from untrimmed hooves, to malnutrition, and infection. The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office said a total of 79 horses were rescued, as well as dogs, from property where they were lacking proper food and care.

In a news release, Dr. Kim Gardner-Graff, Field Services Veterinarian at Humane Colorado said:
“These horses didn’t get this way overnight, and they won’t heal overnight either. We’re treating wounds, infections, advanced lameness, and years of trauma from what appears to be severe neglect.”
Adding:
“These horses appear to have gone without proper care for a very long time. It is going to take extensive resources to bring them back into good health. This is why we need our equine-loving community to partner with us to provide the proper care and medical attention they need to give them the better future they deserve.”

The animal welfare organization said, “Among the herd are young foals and many mares who show signs of pregnancy. Nearly half of the horses exhibit lameness and a critical need for farrier intervention. Many are visibly underweight, and some are battling eye injuries, abscesses, and painful hoof and joint conditions.”

Rehabilitating these horses will take a great deal of time and money. You can learn more about donating at this link to Humane Colorado.
