Hendricks County, Indiana – No dry eyes from staff at the Hendricks County Animal Shelter when a dog, who was lost for five years, was reunited with his owner. According to the shelter staff, Chong’s owner drove all the way from Nebraska to retrieve her long-lost pup.
In a Thursday social media post, the animal welfare agency said, “Our staff worked hard over the few days we had him to make contact with the Lincoln Nebraska Animal Control, microchip company, and original owner. The microchip owner never came forward and never responded, but we were more than happy to reunite Chong with his original family!”
Video shows the moment Chong and his owner first meet…it took about 30 seconds for him to recognize her and then his tail never stopped wagging, and he could not contain his vocal excitement, seemingly trying to tell her all about his years long adventure!
Chong even recognized his former canine brother.
Some people following the shelter’s social media post were confused about the microchip and prior owner. The agency said:
He only had one chip, but our original post was shared on two Lincoln Nebraska lost pet pages and the original owner came forward and made contact with the shelter, explaining the entire situation. We have to follow protocol of making sure we can/cannot contact the owner on the microchip prior to letting the dog go with someone else. The original owner was completely understanding of this process and our need to follow the protocol but was quickly informed she could come retrieve the dog after we hadn’t heard from the person listed on the microchip.
Adding:
The dog got away from the original owner 5 years ago and she was unable to find him. We do not know how the dog got away from the person on the chip.
