Cedartown, Georgia – Days ago, police entered the pasture where a donkey named HeeHaw lived. Tragically, the officers believed the donkey posed a threat and fatally shot him after first using a taser.
HeeHaw’s owner, Hannah Israel, created a Facebook post about her donkey’s death, explaining:
At 12:45 am cops entered my pasture searching for a missing person WITHOUT permission or warning and shot and killed my bottle raised baby donkey.
They claimed he ran up to them braying and they thought they were in danger and shot and killed him after trying to taze him.
Adding:
HeeHaw was raised in the house and did petting zoos he never knew a stranger. And was shot and killed in his OWN pasture for doing what donkeys do. Alerting to a stranger. There is no way this is legal! I will be taking legal action.
Following HeeHaw’s death, the Cedartown Police Department released a statement about the incident:
STATEMENT FROM THE CITY OF CEDARTOWN
The Cedartown Police Department is aware that a city police officer shot and killed a donkey in the early hours of Sunday morning. A Cedartown police officer was on the scene after being called by Polk County Police to assist with a nighttime search for a missing child. The child had not been found at of the time of the shooting. Thankfully, the child was later located at a church near the pasture where the donkey was killed. The Cedartown Police Department has turned over the investigation of the animal shooting to the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division for investigation and placed the officer involved on paid administrative leave while this investigation is ongoing.

There was no reason or excuse for this innocent donkey to lose his life at the hands of this individual. Law enforcement these days seems to be too eager sometimes to use deadly force and innocent humans or animals end up being unjustly killed. Individuals such as this one need to be held accountable for these actions!
I think he did it on purpose, just because he could do it without facing consequences. Disgusting, that’s the continuum of this culture of violence that exists in the US of A. It’s high time it stopped. No one is safe anymore as long as this culture of hatres will prevail. Shame on that “man”. Poor baby donkey. Why was he left alone on that spot ? He should have been safe and protected.
this is just gut wrenching to say the least… all cops need better training when it comes to animals all the way around…. from leaving their police dog in the back of a cop car to die of heat stroke.. to kill a non threatening baby animals is worth firing… but no.. he’s on PAID leave till they figure it out but they wont .. they stand by their own to save their ass…. i hope HEEHAWS family sues the shit out of the cop, the department, the whole city… makes me sick….

What is the baseline requirements to be an armed officer? Seems like many shouldn’t have the privilege of carrying a firearm; there are FAR too many illegitimate and fatal shootings of animals, including humans of all ages

It is absolutely sickening and horrible that officers, while in the line of duty, would instinctively kill harmless animals, or to do cruel things to dogs entrusted to them, and to get away with it!! These officers are complete imbeciles. They cannot be trusted to possess a gun or any dog in their care. THE POLICE FORCE MUST CHANGE THEIR TRAINING AND POLICIES ON A NATIONAL LEVEL!!!
I’m glad the kid was found safe, but they never needed to set foot in the donkey’s pasture to find her— that is what helicopters and drones are for. They could cover a lot more area, a lot more quickly by flying around in a helicopter, announcing through a loudspeaker who they are and the description of who they are looking for; and that way, community members would be able to keep an eye out for the missing person, too. Also, I think it is absolute bull shit for them to have been on this woman’s property without permission, without even a warrant, without doing what common sense and common courtesy dictate (taking the time to find the house, knock on the door, and say “Hi, we are looking for a lost child. Would it be ok with you if we look in your pasture and see if she’s out there?”). If you or I walked right onto someone else’s property without permission, we would be trespassing, even if we thought we had a good reason for doing so, like if we were looking for a missing family member, pet, friend, or neighbor. The same laws that apply to us everyday people must also apply to the people in positions of power, such as law enforcement. And in my opinion, the kind of person that is so afraid of a baby donkey (one of the gentlest creatures there is), that they shoot and kill it, has NO business carrying a firearm and being a police officer in the first place. He should not be on paid leave. Instead, he should be FIRED, and he should be IN JAIL ! He should be sued for one hundred million dollars, and he should be in jail for one hundred years!
