Anderson County, South Carolina – On October 11, a hunter failed to properly identify what he was shooting at and killed a pet donkey at a rescue farm in Belton, South Carolina. Hasty’s Haven identified the slain donkey, who used to be a therapy animal for children with special needs, as Angelique.
In a Facebook post, the organization said:
Emotions are high around here. Angelique is gone. Killed by a hunter. Now (sic) did he miss a deer and the stray bullet hit Angelique, I don’t know. Did he think Angelique was a deer? I don’t know and don’t care what his story is. Why? Because no matter what it won’t bring her back to us. And it DOES NOT change the fact that not only did he take her life, but that he aimed that gun in the direction of a pen full of animals AND straight in the direction of our home.
On Monday, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said the man will face charges:
On October 11, SCDNR law enforcement officers responded to a hunting incident in Anderson County involving a pet donkey that had been shot and killed by a hunter on a neighboring property.
During the investigation, the hunter stated that he had fired at a deer but missed, and the stray bullet struck the donkey. As a result of the investigation, officers charged the hunter with negligent use of a firearm and hunting within 300 yards of a residence. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the incident.
SCDNR extends its sympathies to the owners for the loss of their pet.
Rest easy Angelique.
