Lapeer, Michigan – A Michigan nurse if facing charges after nearly 80 dead cats were found in deplorable conditions at a residence in Lapeer. Officials found over 120 cats living at the home of Emily Karolski, 41, after a delivery driver reported a stench coming from the residence.
Among the estimated 120 cats found inside the squalid house were 73 who had not survived. The ones still alive were taken to Lapeer County Animal Control and rescue agencies around the state for care. Most were suffering with respiratory issues resulting from the dire conditions inside the home. It is reported that the surviving cats have not been made available for adoption.
Karolski’s husband passed away earlier this year. On the fundraiser created to help Emily following his death, her involvement with cat rescue was noted:
Emily is widely known within our rescue and animal welfare community as a trusted resource and advocate for cats. She is often referred to as the “cat guru.” She has consistently stepped in to help save cats in need, guide fosters, and provide support and education to countless individuals seeking help for their pets.
Fox Detroit reports that Emily Karolski works as a nurse practitioner who cares for newborns. She is currently free on a personal recognizance bond and due back in court on July 17.
