Washington, D.C. – Just over a year ago, 10 dogs drowned at a dog boarding facility on Rhode Island Avenue. On Tuesday, Attorney General Schwalb announced details of the settlement against the District Dogs business.
As reported by WUSA 9 News, District Dogs must pay a $100,000 civil penalty and permanently close the Rhode Island Avenue location. Additionally, the business must:
- Obtain a risk management certification for each DC location
- Develop detailed emergency response and evacuation plans for each DC location
- Train all staff on emergency response and evacuation procedures
The August 14, 2023, incident involved part of the business structure collapsing because of flash flooding. Ten dogs caged inside drowned and 20 dogs, and six employees, were rescued.
A spokesperson for District Dogs told the news agency that the settlement was made with no acknowledgement on their part of wrongdoing and emphasized that they agreed to settle because the small business wanted to “avoid the continued financial strain” from the prolonged process.
