Genessee County, Michigan – Dozens of dogs are getting a second chance at life after being rescued from a home where 13 dogs were found dead. According to sources, police went to a home on Oct. 12 after receiving a report of a horrible smell coming from a residence.
Burton Police Chief Brian Ross said the callers told 911 that the smell “was so horrific that they thought there was a dead body in the house and the smell was permeating off the people that lived here,” reports Audacy.
Responding officers found dead dogs in the freezer, under tarps, and on the basement floor. There were 44 neglected dogs still alive but suffering in unbearable conditions – most were in kennels stacked three high, with dogs on the top urinating and defacating on the dogs below.
Police arrested Patricia Stone, 49, and her son. The pair were allegedly breeding the dogs.
Stone is facing charges for:
- Count 1: Cruelty to 25 or more animals (felony punishable by up to 7 years in prison if convicted)
- Count 2: Cruelty – Allowing animals to suffering unnecessarily (felony punishable by up to 7 years in prison if convicted)
- Count 3: Failure to dispose of a dead animal (misdemeanor)
The son, who is not being identified at this time, is undergoing a mental health evaluation to see if he will also be charged.
The dogs were taken to the Genessee County Animal Control facility for care.
