Kakhovka, Ukraine – An estimated 300 zoo animals are believed to be dead following the destruction of a hydroelectric dam. Floodwaters overtook the zoo enclosures on Tuesday and nobody was able to rescue the animals inside.
The dam is located on the Dnipro River which overtook the area after the devastating explosion. On social media, the zoo wrote:
About 300 animals have perished. These animals were loved by the local community. Monkeys Anfisa and Charlik, pony Malysh, donkey Osya, raccoons Mishka, Lolya, Dinka, parrot Venya, crow Roma, marmots, Cameroonian goats, sheep, parrots, guinea pigs, ferrets and many other small pets of ours. Only a couple of swans and ducks survived. A small swan chick, born only 5 days ago, has also perished.
This entire year we were trying to save our animals. The animals were locked in the park.
Adding:
Our grief and pain are immeasurable.
Thanks to everyone who offered help. We don’t need help anymore. Let Kazkova Dibrova remain in our memory as a wonderful part of our city.”
The cause of the explosion that destroyed the dam remains unclear; Ukraine and Russia have both blamed each other.
