Police K9 Fatally Shot When Officers Served Warrant

Newberry County, SC – A K9 with South Carolina State Law Enforcement (SLED) was killed when officers served a felony warrant earlier this month. According to SLED, Coba, a Belgian Malinois mix, was fatally shot in the Prosperity area off Gravel Road.

As reported by WYFF News, the suspect, identified as James Peterson, opened fire when confronted inside the home. “The officers returned fire at the suspect, eliminating the threat.”

A memorial service was held for the four-year-old dog last week. Peterson was treated for his injuries and was booked in the Newberry County Detention Center; he is facing multiple charges, including cruelty to a police dog, breach of peace, possession of a weapon by a person convicted of certain crimes, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon and four counts of pointing and presenting a firearm at a person.
