HomecrimeOwners Charged After Dog Nearly Overdoses On Their Drugs

Owners Charged After Dog Nearly Overdoses On Their Drugs

Myrtle Beach, SC – Two people are facing animal cruelty charges after their dog nearly died from ingesting their drugs. According to sources, 15-pound Sophie, a Chihuahua, ate approximately a gram of her owners’ heroin in Myrtle Beach motel room and nearly died.

If not for the quick actions of Myrtle Beach firefighters, the seven-month-old puppy would not have survived.

It took Narcan and oxygen to bring Sophie back from the brink of death. The Myrtle Beach Government posted details to social media, writing:

The Good Samaritan told firefighters that “Sophie” had eaten heroin. Firefighters sprang into action, grabbing Narcan and administering it to the small puppy to revive her. Between Narcan and oxygen, the firefighters were able to get Sophie breathing. They saved her life. Deputy Fire Chief Vincent Bettinazzi then took her to an emergency animal hospital for further treatment.

Shane Harris, 39, and Serrena Young, 38, are charged with mistreatment of an animal. Harris and Young were sentenced to 15 days in jail and fines of more than $1,000. Harris was released on bail and Young remains behind bars on a $35,000 bond for drug charges.

Sophie does not have to live with the people who hurt her – she was turned over to the Grand Strand Humane Society and will be available for adoption after the criminal investigation is complete.
