Long Beach Island, New Jersey – According to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, the necropsy results are complete on the Minke whale who died after a violent collision with a boat on August 2. The findings revealed the adult female whale was underweight and had a multitude of health issues.
The agency said:
The whale was in overall thin body condition. Superficial cuts were present externally, with bruising present in the blubber and muscle in the areas of trauma on the dorsal side. Blood was present in the lungs. The GI tract was empty with very little digestive material present, and a scant amount of fecal matter. Lesions were present in the stomach.
Adding:
Various biological samples were collected during the necropsy examination and will be sent to a pathologist for further analysis. When results become available, they will be shared via MMSC’s website at the following link- https://mmsc.org/current-cetacean-data
At the conclusion of the necropsy, the whale was buried on the beach.
Video was captured of the whale/boat collision on August 2; a person on the boat fell overboard because of the impact. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) commented on the August 2 incident, writing:
At approximately 3:40 pm a boater in the area reported that a vessel had struck the whale, causing the vessel to nearly capsize and a passenger to go overboard. While the Stranding Coordinator was still enroute, Sea Tow, who had remained on scene to observe the whale, reported that the animal was deceased.
