Ontario, Canada – Hearts are breaking for a special needs dog who has been returned to a Canadian shelter by her adoptive owner. The dog, named Amerika, was returned to the Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary, which wrote:
These are the hardest moments. The surrenders, the returns. Amerika has been brought back to Dog Tales 💔
It’s impossible for her heart to comprehend, which breaks ours.
The animal welfare agency explains that Amerika is incontinent because she was hit by a car, and expressed understanding that her special needs can make finding her the perfect home more difficult. They said they know that it can be a “challenge” to find her the right home, but they are determined to stick with her until the right home is found.
But understanding the challenging situation does not lessen the hurt for Amerika, who does not know why she lost her home.
The rescue group said:
It takes serious consideration to adopt a dog with special needs. Amerika is a survivor and her spirit is strong. Amerika can be a little jumpy when excited, so older children would be most appropriate. She loves playing with other dogs and is so loving and affectionate. She is so, so worth it. All of it 💕

We know there is a home out there for her and we won’t give up. Commitment doesn’t come when we’re snuggling them and enjoying their tail wags and kisses. Commitment is promising to do things in the future when you aren’t going to want to do them. It takes serious consideration to adopt a dog with special needs. Amerika is a survivor and her spirit is strong. Amerika can be a little jumpy when excited, so older children would be most appropriate. people suck, sure play dress up but when the novelty wears off just dump her like garbage. i hope they find a special place for her
They knew she was incontinent when they adopted her, if they couldn’t take her as she is they don’t deserve her anyway. They make doggie diapers for dogs who have no control over their bladders. I pray she finds the perfect family that will love her unconditionally and she will return the love tenfold. There’s a family looking for this beautiful pup.
EXACTLY – it’s not like it came as a surprise. What a shitty hurtful thing to do.
I would love her. Problems & all. I had a dog that was finding it hard to get up. So he messed everywhere. We just cleaned up the mess & moved on. If there’s a way I can have this baby girl I would take her for how long she has. No animals are throw away. I live in Thunder Bay. I will pay for her to come here. This truly breaks my heart. Poor baby wondering what she did wrong. I pray she will find her furever family to love her for who she is. What a sweetheart.
I have to make this comment ….I know u all want to find homes but not to VET potential owners is a huge problem and why these precious souls suffer when returned its clear the new owner had not thought it through very sad poor little dog

To the Lady called Yvette what a lovely lady you are, I sincerely hope that you end up as Amerika’s Mom, I just know the way you talk you are a dog lover, I too am a dog lover, I have 5 rescues all from abroad!!!! Had I have been closer, I would have happily taken her on, she sounds an absolute delight 😊 good luck from me, in the UK!!!!
