Port Canaveral, FL – Late last week, a man driving a truck mowed down nearly 50 shore birds at the Port Canaveral Cargo Dock. According to sources, 35 of the birds died at the scene and another 13 maimed birds had to be humanely euthanized.
Heather Pepe, co-founder of Wild Florida Rescue, commented on what is believed to be an intentional act of cruelty:
“All killed in an instant … left the 13 to suffer until they were put down or died. How this person hit them though, even in the road. I don’t know, they would have had to gun it. Step on the gas and gunned it.”
As reported by Fox Orlando, the targeted birds were apparently sitting in a puddle when the man ran over them.
The cruel incident is under investigation and evidence will be submitted to the Brevard County state attorney’s office for review.
