Livingston Parish, Louisiana – A Louisiana family is mourning the death of a blind deer they had watched over for the past seven years. According to sources, the deer was orphaned as a fawn and the Sibley family took him under their wing until he grew up.
The deer, dubbed Little Buck, became a beloved member of the family and other area residents – though he was free to come and go at he pleased. Everything was turned upside down when Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents received a tip about a “pet deer” at the property and decided that he had to be put down.
Jaci Sibley tells WAFB News:
“My son’s in tears. I got him off the couch watching cartoons right before our family Christmas party to come tell his deer goodbye. They came and darted him. He was laying in his bedding area for 20 minutes. They shot him with a dart and then had to shoot him again.”
Adding insult to heartbreak, Mr. Sibley was charged $1650 and was charged for possession of a four-legged animal. State Representative Lauren Ventrella caught wind of the troubling incident. Ventrella was able to get legislation passed this year that allows for wildlife rehabilitation for certain animals like squirrels, skunks, opossums, raccoons, rabbits, or chipmunks – she believes that “in the spirit” of the legislation, orphaned deer should be included.
She said:
“I mean, so it comes down to a matter of common sense, right? If this deer is free to come and go as it pleases, is that really even possessing wildlife in the first place?”
Fortunately for the Sibleys, prosecutors declined moving forward with the case and the fine and criminal charge was dropped.

Si les tueurs, délateurs et autres salopards disparaissaient d’un coup de baguette magique, le problème de surpopulation mondiale serait résolu!
Madness, horrific madness! So so so sad. This is crazy.
Criminal charges for the people who murdered this innocent individual 🤬
unbelievably cruel,unbelievably nonsensical
Bastards. All of ’em, just heartless bastards. They killed the deer, they killed that other guys squirrel-(Peanut), and his raccoon, This is why you keep your mouth shut and tell no one. We live in a sick, sick, world.
My condolences to the family.
DNREC employees talk about how much they care for wildlife. Seems to me they like killing them more than anything. This deer was happy, and not harming anyone. I hope the Karen with blood on her hands who reported is found and given a special reward for her great service of not minding her own business.
Shame on those who made this decision. It’s ridiculous how many times those who are tasked with doing the right thing for animals do the wrong thing. I feel for that family. There needs to be more people like them on this planet and fewer who would take the life of the deer because they are unable to use common sense. The world was a cruel place for that deer yet he had a few people who cared.
Who’s to say this is a pet if the deer is just roaming free through yards??? Just because they called it a pet??? Then the homeowner is now CHARGED $1,650 for having a “pet” deer??? OMG, WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO??? There’s murders, animal abusers, rapists, poachers, torturers, all kinds of criminals and THIS i the situation the wildlife decides to handle???!!!
Who the hell are you to play God, Louisiana!!! The deer was doing well for several years and now you decide to kill it. It was free to come and go! I have wild birds and rabbits that make my yard their home and I call them pets, but it doesn’t mean they live in my house!!!!!! Deplorable and stupid decision on your part!!!
this is why u DONT TELL NO ONE u are taking care of any wild life…. who made the game wardens GOD… no one… what was this poor deer doing besides trying to live being blind…. as for the TIPPSTER… well u can go straight to hell….right along the wardens…
Who is the worthless piece of crap that gave the wildlife department their “tip” for people having a pet deer???!!! This family was actually helping wildlife and our so called rangers or wildlife department people were ok to just kill a deer in someone’s yard???!!! WTF IS WRONG WITH THEM???
There is a special place in hell for these people that kill innocent animals.
daily EVIL from DEVIL usa. Hang the DEVILS who murdered him
the Dept of Wildlife must only hire animal haters, they need to be fired. Sure the law didn’t spell out Deers, every animal on the planet was listed in the law to leave alone, but didn’t say Deer, so if you fire them they will just get re-hired with backpay, what you need to do is transfer them to Antartica or Death Valley….what is really upsetting is this is the only second place I read about this…this need to blasted online. He signed Bucky’s law, how come this deer wasn’t under Bucky’s law?
These shits need to get a proper job instead of killing animals and traumatising families.
The damn Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents are the ones who should be charged with a crime – they go and kill a harmless deer because of some “tip” from an ugly gossipmonger without getting all the facts from EVERYONE in the neighborhood who better understood the situation. Backwards bastards should be FIRED.
And they charged and fined these kind and decent people (whom the world needs MORE of) – thanklfully the stupid charges were dropped. Why don’t they charge and fine people who run over families of geese and hunters who poach? They never do ANYTHING in THOSE cases.
The State Rep has the right idea and did the right thing.
Really, in a world of murderers, robberies, carjackings, home invasions, etc., is killing helpless, harmless animals necessary?
