South Lake Tahoe, CA – Two bear cubs have been orphaned after their mother was killed by wildlife officials in South Lake Tahoe. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the bear had a history of “human conflict,” and was euthanized because she was considered to be “a danger to public safety.”
On June 24, the agency said:
Over the weekend, the bear broke into a locked, occupied trailer at 4:30 a.m. within Emerald Bay State Park, swiped at the camper inside, sending her to the hospital.
When the bear entered the trailer, the camper tried to scare her away by screaming and using pots and pans to make noise – the bear swiped at the woman and left her with cuts and bruises on the arms and a hand, reports KCRA News. The woman was “escorted” to a local hospital for treatment.
Officials said the same bear harassed other campers on the same morning and stated that euthanasia was the “last resort.”
The agency said the cubs have been captured, writing:
“The sow’s two cubs have been captured safely and taken to a wildlife rehabilitation facility where it’s hoped they eventually can be returned to the wild.”
BEAR League has released a statement about the sow’s death, writing:
UPDATE regarding the mother bear and her two cubs who frequented a State Parks campground: The mother has been killed, and her cubs have been sent to Gold Country Wildlife Rescue.
Last night, campers were forced to endure the terror of hearing the two cubs scream in fear, trapped as their mother likely lay dead nearby. Despite countless pleas from citizens urging non-lethal solutions – BEAR League’s offer to assist with hazing, the option to temporarily close the campground, or efforts to hold people accountable for the unsecured food that continued to draw her in – authorities doubled down and finally managed to kill this intelligent mother bear, orphaning her two traumatized cubs.

Do they not see what humans do every day? Human conflict-and who is responsible for that? Not the bears but the people who too often act irresponsibly. There were options but these killers posing as wildlife officials chose the convenient and deadly one, leaving two cubs (babies0 orphaned. Such human centricity is ugly and I am once again sickened by the actions of people, though that happens literally every day. I say too often that we are not special or them most/only important species (really, the least important in my opinion) but merely the one with the power-power that is too often abused. We are the most dangerous and, in the end, the one true invasive species on the planet. I am disgusted by this violence, by this killing of a mother bear. How do these people live with themselve?
So killing the mother also means that’ll kill the cubs because babies NEED the mothers!!! Once again, the human does more killing and destroying and contributing to losing wildlife entirely.
EVIL from DEVIL usa. Murdering a starving animal whose habitat & food chain has been encroached & wiped out by over populated human DEVILS. She could be trapped with cubs & relocated or the human encampment is that area banned for a year so the bear & cubs can self relocate

Once again our government officials fail to do the right thing. It’s a wild animal in a wild environment. There were other options. Bless those poor cubs. I hope those responsible experience the same devastating loss during their lives as those cubs have.
