Olympic National Park, WA – A cougar was found and killed after attacking a four-year-old child on a popular hiking trail in the Olympic National Park. According to sources, the big cat, who was collared, attacked the child on the afternoon of July 20.
KIRO News reports the cougar was scared off by the child’s father, who is being hailed a hero. Steve Murrow, who was in the area on the day the child was bitten, tells the news agency, “I don’t think that kid would survive if it wasn’t for his dad jumping in. I mean, he’s a hero. You know, it just boils down to safety in numbers and it is rare that something like this would happen.”
The National Park Service briefly closed Hurricane Ridge Road and the surrounding area after the attack. Rangers working with a canine team tracked the big cat and killed it on Monday morning.
If you encounter a cougar on a hike, stay calm and do not run. Maintain eye contact and slowly back away while facing the cougar. Make yourself appear larger by raising your arms, opening your jacket, or holding up a backpack. Speak firmly and loudly to show you’re not prey. If the cougar behaves aggressively, throw rocks or sticks without crouching or turning your back. In the rare event of an attack, fight back using any available object.

That was the parents fault not watching their own kid!!! But again, it’s let’s kill the wild animal whose trying to live his life in the woods your intruding in!!!! It’s their home and yet you stupid idiotic murderers kill the wildlife for doing what is natural! Fine and jail the god damn irresponsible parents, they’re absolute idiots!!!
Completely agree. No idea why the cougar has to be killed just because it’s hungry. Absolutely horrible behaviour by humans once again! Makes me so mad.
Shame on the National Park Service for having killed this beautiful person, this sentient being.

Why hunt down and kill the cat when the father should have had his child close to him and be more aware of their surroundings?
Was wondering same thing was the father busy on his cell phone. Our Wildlife is always gets Killed maybe the Cat was protecting its Cubs.No need to kill investigate and relocate .These wildlife agents always take the easy way out. Im so tired of our Wildlife being slaughtered because of stupid people .
he should have tried to scare the cat away, scream, throw things at it, back away slowly. tranquilizer the cat and relocate the cat farther away from the trail.
