Las Vegas, Nevada – A Canadian man broke into a Las Vegas strip resort’s flamingo habitat on a recent visit Sin City. According to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, 33-year-old Mitchell Fairbarn stole a flamingo from an enclosure at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino during the early morning hours on Tuesday.
In the process, Fairbarn allegedly injured multiple birds in the flamingo habitat and managed to extract a flamingo named Peachy. The man took the bird knapped victim into an elevator and then to a hotel room. Security footage shows Fairbarn “wrestling it by the neck and legs in the hallway” along the way.
According to the police report, Fairbarn security footage shows Fairbarn “laughing in the video and says ‘I’m taking it home.’
After being confronted by the authorities Fairbarn claimed that he entered the flamingo enclosure after seeing a bird “in distress.” Adding, “He stated he knows that ‘popping’ the wing back into its place [is] a common practice for birds, such as ducks. He has knowledge of this because he is a farm boy.”
Peachy suffered a badly injured wing that required stitches. Two other birds in the habitat area were also injured.
Fairbarn’s escapade resulted in four felony counts of animal cruelty. The arrest report read: “In addition to Fairbarn having on his cellphone multiple videos and pictures of him torturing a flamingo in his hotel room, by choking it and throwing it to the ground multiple times, while he is laughing about it, and with absolutely no regard for the safety and wellness of the animals, he was arrested and charged with four counts of Willful/ Malicious Torture/ Maim/ Kill an Animal.”
