The shelter created dog rooms that prevent them from seeing other dogs and allow them to rest thanks to soundproof enclosures.

The behavior of the dogs speak volumes…normally dogs held at animal shelters are pacing and barking frantically from stress. But the dogs at San Diego Humane are enjoying deep sleep and peace in their quiet kennels.

People have shared their positive thoughts about the amazing improvement:

And hopes to see this innovative design be implemented nationwide.

Great job San Diego Humane! Wonderful to see.

  1. Why wasn’t this done from the very beginning of animal shelters?! Knowing how sensitive dogs are and how keen their hearing is, people would have had the animals’ interests first and created safe, peaceful havens for them instead of death row prisons full of harsh, loud noise and fear and desperation. If not for dog BREEDERS this peaceful design could be used everywhere because the busiest shelters would not be so overwhelmed all of the time.

  2. San Diego Humane Society needs to answer for sending 326 small animals to a reptile breeder named Colton Jones. Colton then used the small animals, some of which the San Diego Humane Society requested foster homes bring back, to live feed to snakes and froze off others.
The Humane Society deserves no praise for the dog kennels. They are tax payer funded and do not care equally for ALL the animals the should be a voice for. I sign as many petitions as I can to bring animal abusers to justice. I am very disappointed to see this posted on Animal Victory’s page. I do hope the ladies that run it, look into what happened to the 326 small animals and shed some light on what transpired.

    • I tried to find a current update on that horrible business but the latest is November 30 or so. In the HSSA (Humane Society of So. Arizona) report it shows that they’ve been selling birds and small animals (mice, rabbits, etc.) to those reptile breeders since 2010! And the San Diego HS has been sending small pets to HSSA for some time as well. Those responsible have got to be held accountable and prosecuted for this. But it seems it’s stalled in nowhere land. What the hell? My guess is that SDHS provided the innovative, peaceful shelter design to appease the public and distract people away from their dealings with HSSA. Here is a search term for an article and the report for anyone who wants to look:
      Copy into search bar:

and in there in the first paragraph is a link to the HSSA report.

  3. Just what a social pack animaI craves – solitary confinement. I DO hope that sometime during the day they are allowed to socialize.

I wish I could have had free reign when I was younger to run a real “shelter” within the system. They could take a lesson from the sanctuaries, but they won’t because they’re in “the system.”
