Vista, CA – A California landlord reached out to San Diego Humane officials for help after their tenant abandoned over a dozen pets in a two-bedroom Vista apartment. According to the animal welfare agency, more than a dozen cats and dogs were living in squalor.
San Diego Humane writes about the conditions inside the residence:
Our Humane Officers entered the abandoned apartment on Oct. 1 and found 11 dogs and two cats living in hoarding-like conditions.
The rescue was extremely challenging due to the amount of trash and debris filling the two-bedroom apartment. More than a dozen pets had created tunnels to move around inside the unit, which was stacked floor to ceiling with household items. Many of the dogs were hiding under beds and furniture, making the rescue a four-day effort that required additional staff, large dumpsters and deep cleaning.
Rescuers found 11 dogs and two cats in the apartment. The dogs, including Pomeranians and Chihuahuas were frightened and in poor condition, with fleas, skin issues and overgrown nails.
Humane officers are using traps and cameras to ensure that no other pets are in the apartment. The organization said:
This rescue comes at a time when we’re already struggling with record numbers of dogs in our shelters. Today, we are now caring for 792 dogs, and we desperately need our community’s help. Please adopt, foster or donate to help make space and care for animals in need.
