Gallatin County, MT – Last week, a hunter in the midst of tracking a deer was mauled by a grizzly bear near Yellow Mule Trail outside of Big Sky, Montana. According to Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue, the man’s hunting party called 911 for assistance.
A team of rescuers, including Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue (GCSSAR) volunteers, responded to the call for help. Rescuers reached the hunter and transported him to a Life Flight Helicopter waiting at a nearby helicopter pad.

The mauling prompted officials to close a portion of Custer Gallatin National Forest. A press release from the U.S. Forest Service explains:
The closure is necessary after an individual was attacked by a grizzly bear and shot at and likely wounded the bear. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Forest Service staff are investigating the incident and are trying to locate the bear.”
The hunter was admitted to a hospital in Bozeman with “severe” injuries.
