Tampa, FL – A woman is facing multiple charges after claiming to find three badly neglected dogs behind a gas station in the woods behind Blessings Gas Station on US 41. According to the authorities, 29-year-old Carla Sanchez Diaz lied about finding the dogs, who were taken in by the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.
Sanchez Diaz had inconsistencies in her story and the authorities reviewed surveillance footage from the gas station where the dogs were allegedly found; the footage revealed the dogs were never there.

Investigators visited the woman’s home where she confessed to owning the dogs. “Appalling conditions” were discovered at the woman’s home. The authorities found five children, and two additional dogs, living in squalor, leading to multiple charges, including:
-
5 counts of child neglect
-
3 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals
-
3 counts of animal abandonment
-
3 counts of unlawful confinement or abandonment of an animal
-
2 counts of cruelty to animals
The children were taken into protective custody, and the two dogs were taken to Hillsborough County Animal Control.
One of the three dogs initially taken to the shelter (by Sanchez Diaz) died. The other two, eight-month-old puppies, are recovering from neglect and should be available for adoption soon.
