Simsbury, CT – In late June, a courageous woman quickly took action when a bear dragged her senior dog away during a hike. Kayleigh Roy said her 10-year-old dog, Phoenix, put herself between a mother bear and her cubs and Roy when they were enjoying a hike.
In a fundraiser, Roy said:
On Sunday, June 29th, while hiking in Simsbury, Connecticut, we were suddenly caught in a terrifying encounter with a mother bear and her cubs. In an instant, Phoenix—my brave 10-year-old pup—put herself between us and danger. She was attacked, dragged into the woods by her neck, and severely injured.
Roy set out to save her dog, catching up to the bear and swinging her backpack at the bear’s face. The scare tactic worked – the bear let go of Phoenix when the bag hit her in the nose. The dog sustained serious injuries, and Roy had to carry her a mile back to the car.
Over $16,000 has been raised for Phoenix’s veterinary care – the brave dog is expected to recover.

Roy tells WFSB News this is this first time she has encountered a bear during an outing; she is grateful her companion survived the terrifying encounter.
