Update 4/12/2023: After the original publication of this article, more information was released about the devastating dairy farm explosion. It is now estimated that more than 18,000 cattle perished in the blast and fires.
Dimmitt, Texas – An unknown number of cows died when a dairy farm in Dimmitt exploded on Monday night. According to sources, the massive explosion rocked the Southfork Dairy Farm around 7:21 p.m.
One person was injured in the blast; they were flown to UMC Hospital in Lubbock and listed in critical condition.
The blaze spread to the dairy cow holding pens, killing an unknown number of cattle. It is unclear what caused the explosion; it is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Texas Department of Emergency Management.

please keep us informed about this. i was raised on a farm and milked cows so i’m very worried when animals get hurt and they can’t get out.

Whatever the reason, cows are separated from the calves and even if they get to roam they are kept for the purposes of people. It is very traumatic for mothers and calves to be separated and what happens to the cows when they can no longer produce milk? They are usually killed. That milk is for their babies, not for people and so those cows should never have been in that situation and been killed in an explosion even if it was an accident.

I cried for all those souls and how frightened they must’ve been. 18k is ALOT of animals, and NO ONE could open a door and any side of this building/buildings, and get ANY out? this is criminal negligence. AND just like all the other explosions, fires (affecting food supply chain), derailments exposing dangerous chemicals, it will be ruled an accident.
