Ottawa, Ontario – A shuttered Canadian marine park has threatened to euthanize 30 beluga whales if they do not receive federal funding. According to sources, the Marineland Zoo and amusement park closed to the public last year, and they have run out of funds to care for the remaining beluga whales in their care.
The marine park hoped to send the remaining captive whales to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom theme park in China, but the government denied the request. Fisheries minister Joanne Thompson claims moving the whales “would perpetuate the treatment these belugas have endured.”
Managers of the park demanded cash from the government – and threatened to euthanize the whales if the cash infusion was not received. The demand letter allegedly states, “If we do not receive a response by that date, we will have no choice but to presume that the answers to our inquiries are negative,” adding that it will “face the devastating decision of euthanasia.”
Thompson denied the request and stated that the park’s failure to plan was not the government’s responsibility.
According to the Associated Press, 20 whales have died at the marine park since 2019.
