Whitewater, WI – Staff at a Wisconsin animal shelter was shocked when an elderly dog delivered a puppy. The 14-year-old Beagle, Zoey, had been confiscated after her owner died, but nobody knew that the senior girl was pregnant.
Albert’s Dog Lounge Rescue shares Zoey’s story, writing:
There are no words that could ever truly capture the heartbreak of Zoey’s story. At approximately 14 years old, Zoey the beagle should be curled up on a couch somewhere, dozing peacefully in her golden years beside a human who adores her. But life hasn’t been kind to her.
Zoey lived with many other animals before being confiscated after her owner passed away suddenly. She arrived at the shelter covered in old lady lumps and bumps, her frail body riddled with mammary tumors — too many to count — and a painfully bulging eye, likely from long-untreated glaucoma.
If that wasn’t shocking enough, shelter staff were absolutely stunned to find that this elderly, exhausted girl had just given birth in the shelter. Geriatric and worn, Zoey became a mother… and only one pup survived.
Zoey and her baby left the shelter on June 24 and joined the rescue group, which has vowed to care for her and her puppy. You can visit the rescue group on Facebook at this link.
