Houston, Texas – On Friday night, a van transporting several rescue dogs from Texas organizations to adoptive homes in New York, caught fire, killing seven dogs who were inside. According to sources, the van caught fire on I-270 in Illinois in Madison County.
Cypress Lucky Mutt Rescue, who had multiple dogs on the transport van, shared the devastating news on Facebook, writing:
Our Cypress Lucky Mutt Rescue Family suffered tremendous loss last night.
While en route to New York—with several stops planned to deliver 11 precious souls to their forever homes—our transport van was tragically involved in a devastating fire. We are heartbroken to share that 7 of the dogs on board did not survive
At this time, we do not know the exact cause of the fire. What we do know is that the blaze was fast and intense. We take a small amount of comfort in hoping the ones that did not survive passed quickly and without prolonged suffering.

One dog, named Guapo, survived the tragic blaze. The Eskidoodle is currently hospitalized with severe burns, reports Belles Buds Rescue. The rescue group said:
Our hearts are broken for the lives lost — beloved pups who were on their way to forever homes. Their adopters are grieving. Their fosters are devastated. The transport team is shattered. Everyone involved poured love and safety into these dogs. This tragedy has shaken us all to the core.
Now, we need your help — more than ever — to give Guapo the care he needs and to honor the souls we lost.

Find Belles Buds Rescue on Facebook to learn more about you can help.
The driver of the van escaped the fire and has been credited for rescuing many of the dogs from the devastating blaze. The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.

I totally agree with every word Margo stated. WHO was the cause of this and why did the driver and 1 pup survive??? You better find out who murdered these helpless pups who were on their way home instead of to the cemetery!!!! Shame on this for happening they depended on humans taking care of them, instead they died burning to death!!!! Someone must pay for their lives and be severely punished- light them on fire!
Yes, this is tragic, but a vehicle can catch fire for a number of reasons, and they can be very explosive, and very fast. The driver did get 4 dogs out, and judging by the burns on one of the surviving dogs, I’m quite sure that the driver got burned as well. It is easy to criticize a victim from the comfort of your couch.
I had my rescue German Shepherd transported from California to Maryland. Transports & transporters are not easy to accomplish. Transports take dogs like mine from the Euthanasia List to a 2nd chance.
I don’t think any of the armchair detectives here have a clue what it’s like driving thousands of miles with a van load of 10-20 large barking dogs. As far as smell goes, shit happens, no matter how many times they stop for bathroom breaks. If it was me, I’d have the front windows open.
STOP PICKING ON RESCUERS.
IF YOU’RE SO FUCKING PERFECT, DROP EVERYTHING & DEDICATE EVERY WAKING MOMENT & EVERY CENT YOU OWN TO HELP SAVE ANIMALS.
ALSO, DO YOU STILL EAT ANIMALS? THOUGHT SO….
Be greatful to those who dedicate their lives to rescue & STOP CRITICIZING THEM!

I sincerely hope they continue the investigation to completion, because I am struggling to understand how a vehicle bursts into flames, for no reason, with no warning, when you have live souls on board. This is an incredibly important transport vehicle and should have been treated as such. Was the vehicle serviced regularly (and properly); and was there a “no smoking in company vehicles” policy at Cypress Lucky Mutt Rescue? These and many other questions immediately flew into my mind when reading this devastating report. A discarded cigarette needs to be looked at as a possible cause of the fire.
ALSO; why was there not an emergency evacuation plan in place, so this “driver” could have efficiently and safely removed all the pups from the van in a timely manner? Would you transport humans with such utter disregard for safety?
I have just read a news report which stated that all the dogs were in kennels in the van.
It all just sounds like a massive fuck up, and somewhat of a cover up. How/Why would it take so long to realize the van is on fire? It takes AGES for a vehicle to burn to the extent as shown in the photo, so where was the “driver”? Something is not right here.
In closing I would like to add that the comment from Cypress LMR “We take a small amount of comfort in hoping the ones that did not survive passed quickly and without prolonged suffering” – I have to ask; on what planet does being trapped, terrified and burning to death happen “quickly and without suffering”? FFS !
My apologies if I appear harsh and mistrusting, but if I smell bullshit, there’s usually bullshit.
I am devastated for these innocent pups who died so horrifically, and for their heartbroken forever families.
THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED.
