Fort Lauderdale, FL – It was a big week for a German shepherd named Bella who was rescued from a canal and then reunited with a family she had not seen in five years. On Tuesday, the shepherd was rescued from a Fort Lauderdale canal near the 400 block of Northwest 23rd Street.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue pulled the exhausted, struggling dog from the water and took her back to FLFR’s Firehouse 47 for food, water, and some rest. At the firehouse, it was quickly apparent that Bella had an owner somewhere given her sweet demeanor.
With the help of a microchip scanner, Bella’s owners were located in St. Cloud. As reported by WFLA, her family was forced to give her up five years ago when their house burned down and they had to move into a hotel. They had attempted to find her in the years that followed, but until they received the call about Bella being rescued from the canal, they had been unsuccessful.
