Ventura County, CA – Two men and a dog were killed when a small plane crashed on Saturday afternoon in a Simi Valley neighborhood. The deceased have been identified as 69-year-old Paul Berkovitz and his 36-year-old son, Matthew Berkovitz, and a dog named Brody.
Family of the deceased released a statement after the deadly accident:
“Paul was a devoted father and husband, a passionate pilot, and a lifelong animal lover. Brody, his loyal companion, was by his side on many of his flights. Matt shared his father’s passion for aviation, and the time they spent flying together brought them both great joy.”
After news of the crash circulated, tributes to the men were shared on social media. The Army of the Kind Facebook page said, “Paul and Matthew were volunteers for Pilots N Paws, helping rescue animals across the USA. They’ve helped save countless animals from euthanasia and were huge animal lovers.”
The plane hit two homes when it went down; residents were home when the plane hit, but no injuries were reported. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

It is a very big shame that this happened to a close knit normal living family.
Trying not to be morbid here but should have happened to one or more of these sick brained arrogant animal torturers and murderers! They say ‘God’ works in mysterious ways. Well, he sure got it wrong here – did he not???
My heartfelt condolences as there is nothing right now that anyone can say to ease the grief.
Look back on the good times and try to keep strong.

Why are there so many crashes with these small planes? Even more sad because these were selfless animal rescuers! Deep prayers for the family and lost beloved pet!
So sad! My Deepest Sympathy to the family and we lost wonderful rescue people and a wonderful dog, RIP
Sadly the types of people we don’t want to lose from this world. The animals rescued as a result of the efforts with Pilots N Paws are certainly grateful.
