Copenhagen, Denmark – Three piglets have been spared certain death after being stolen from an art exhibit where they were going to be starved to death. According to sources, the piglets were part of Chilean Artist Marco Evaristti’s art exhibit in Denmark.
Evaristti intended to deprive the piglets of food and water to spread a message about the cruelty of factory pig farming – the art exhibit was titled, “And Now you Care.” The exhibit drew the ire of animal lovers appalled that innocent piglets were being sacrificed to make a point.
But the piglets were stolen before they could be starved to death. As reported by USA Today, the piglets vanished when a maintenance crew “left the room” According to the New York Post, the piglets were spared death thanks to Caspar Steffensen, a friend of the artist, who was urged to take action by his 10-year-old daughter.
According to the news agency, Steffensen partnered with the animal rights group De Glemte Danske (the Forgotten Danes) – helping the advocates sneak into the exhibit to break the piglets out of their cage of death.
The artist shut down his exhibit after reporting the theft to the police. He said:
“I called up police on Saturday to report the piglets stolen and I had to shut down the entire exhibition because of that — so I was very disappointed when Caspar told me on Tuesday that he was involved in the theft,” adding, “But then I thought about it for a few hours and realized that at least this way the piglets would have a happy life.”
Evaristti’s exhibit was meant to spread awareness about the cruelty of pig production in Denmark, were an estimated 25,000 piglets die of starvation every day.
