Orca Pod Trapped In Ice Appear To Have Escaped

Rausu, Japan – A pod of orcas who got trapped in an ice drift off the island of Hokkaido in Japan appear to have escaped. The pod was spotted by fishermen on Tuesday – they were huddled together in a small area with their heads above water, attempting to stay alive where the ice did not cover the water.

People monitoring the pod noticed that they were gone by Wednesday. A search of the area did not reveal where they had gone and officials believe they escaped. As reported by MSN News, a local official believes they are safe, stating, “We believe they were able to escape safely,”

Before the orcas escaped, there were justified fears that the entire pod might perish because there were no plans for a rescue effort.
