Rausu, Japan – A tragic situation is happening in the frigid water off the island of Hokkaido in Japan. A pod of orcas is trapped in a drift of ice and they are struggling to survive in a small opening where they can be seen with their heads above water.
As reported by NHK World, fisherman spotted the pod on Tuesday and notified officials with the Japan Coast Guard.
The situation appears to be hopeless as there are no rescue efforts planned. A similar situation happened in the same area in 2005 with most of the trapped orcas dying.
