North Carolina – Over the weekend, the family of 39-year-old Chris Palmer called off search efforts for the missing man after they learned that he was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness. According to a statement from Chris’ father, the family believes that Chris took his own life because of the terminal diagnosis.
The original statement released by the family made no reference to Palmer’s canine companion, Zoey. But, on Sunday Chris’ father, Bren, made a one-time statement about the German shepherd, explaining that she was also “very sick.”
The entire public statement reads:
This will the only time I comment on Christophers beloved Zoey. This for those that dont know him or us that have been speculating. She was a beautiful well behaved 11 year old German Shepard that he loved. She has been by his side since she was a puppy. Zoey was very sick took several medications and also had sever hip dysplasia. Its our belief that our son spent some time in the woods to be with her in her final days. Evidence of that was a shovel found in his truck and after her passing he laid her to rest and continued his trip to the coast. We thank everyone for their concern and prayers for Zoey.
The official missing person report was made for Chris Palmer on January 16. His last known contact with his family was on January 9. His red Ford truck was found on the beach at Cape Hatteras, NC, on January 10.
Rest easy Chris and Zoey.
