Bath, New York – A 23-year-old man is facing a Class E felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals for abandoning a crated dog in a Bath, New York, residence. According to the authorities, Zachariah D. Hill abandoned a crated pit bull mix in a home, leaving the dog to die a slow and painful death.
The horrific discovery was made on October 4 after officers with the Bath Police Department responded to a home after receiving a call about an odor of decomposition. Fearing a human might be dead inside, officers entered the home and found a crate with the dog’s starved body.
As reported by WETM News, the investigation revealed the horrible details about how the dog died:
“a female pit-bull mix was left locked in a crate inside the home with no food or water for an unknown period of time. Officials further state that the dog had died as a result of starvation, and that evidence determined she had survived for some time by eating her own feces.”
The investigation further revealed that Hill had moved out of the home approximately five weeks before the dog was found, and that he had been offered numerous resources and assistance for his dog. Rather than taking the assistance, he left her behind to die.
Hill was booked into Steuben County Jail and later released.
