Lonoke County, Arkansas – An Arkansas man was arrested after disturbing conditions were found on his property in Lonoke County. According to the Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to property in the South Bend area and found 16 dogs, alive and deceased, in deplorable conditions.
The authorities identify Daniel Marlin Toennies, 38, as the person responsible for the cruel situation. At the property, three dogs had already died, and the surviving dogs were living on short chains and suffering from starvation.
Toennies was arrested on 19 counts of aggravated animal cruelty, a Class D felony. The surviving dogs were taken in by area rescue organizations.
Sheriff John Staley said:
“This case is heartbreaking, but it shows the power of working together. Because someone cared enough to speak up, and because of the quick response from our investigators and rescue partners, these dogs now have a second chance at life. Animal Cruelty will not be tolerated in Lonoke County. We are grateful for everyone who played a part in saving them.”
